Splashback Disappointment with a capital D

I am sure everyone who has been building looks forward to the day they see their splashback installed........well it's in, and I am quite disappointed :'-( to say the least! I know it will be ok, but I was really hoping for one of those stunning splashbacks that you see. We wanted a light spearmint colour, and the lady at M said that because the glass has a green tinge to go with a vivid white background and it will bring out the green in the glass.....well it hasn't....at all :'''-(  I am so sad!! And we paid a few hundred extra for metallic glass and you can't even notice unless you are right up close and looking for it :''(  The only thing I can really do is put a strip of coloured  LED lights across the top of it and have them on green, and maybe brighten it up with a fruit bowl or something I don't know! Argh!! It would be waaayyy expensive to remove it and replace it, if anyone knows approximately how much please tell me but I am pretty sure it is about $1500-2k :-( I know it will look a bit better when the covers are off and you can see the cupboards and benchtops etc but definitely not excited like I thought I would be. It's ok you don't need to be polite with your comments, I know it looks bland :-(

As for the paint, we are just going to leave it as is, it is too costly to change it now and will hold our build up even more. It doesn't look quite so yellow when it isn't in the sunlight and the extra coats are on. So we will see how we go and just paint it ourselves after handover if it doesn't grow on us completely.

Apparently there should be a fair bit of action next week when the painting is all finished, shower screens, toilets, baths etc. Our SS has said we are on-track for a last week in July, first week in August finish :-D

  1. Mel, I actually really love it! But at the same time I get your frustration that it wasn't really the look you were going for. I'm wishing we had gone for a glass splashback rather than tiles. It's still looking very fab though, for sure!

    1. Thanks Lauren! I do love a glass splashback, and am hoping it will grow on me even more, at least the colour is unlikely to date lol

  2. Under the LED lights (even just white ones) the sparkle will really happen from that metallic paint. Lights and appliances will make a huge difference to the overall look I bet.

  3. Oh Mel that's crap that you're disappointed! I agree with Lauren, it does look really fresh and bright but obviously not what you wanted. I would email your CSC and tell her you don't like it and could she suggest any other colours because the white clearly didn't work. At least she knows then she's stuffed up and won't keep telling people! We're looking at a completion date of around the same time - yippee!

    1. That's great you are not too far off completion either!

  4. Hey Mel, sorry to hear you're disappointed. The standard glass has a green look to it so I'm surprised they upgraded your glass because the upgraded glass is clear. Personally I love a pure white splashback. It's so clean and crisp. Get some green glass bottles to accessorize and you'll get a nice green accent to your kitchen. Ikea have some great blue & green glass bottles & vases that would look great :)

    1. Great idea Nat! I saw those green bottles at Ikea a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't justify buying them as we already have two aqua ones, but now I have a reason to go back to Ikea :-D The glass upgrade was just the metallic finish not the clear white glass, we talked about the difference but as we wanted they green we stayed with the standard 'coloured' glass.

  5. Maybe they should have specified a greener glass. It's so difficult to imagine something where there isn't a sample to actually look at. Going with someones guess can be dangerous. Metallic paint, looks like they just added glitter.

    1. Yeah I think a greener painted background would have been more to my liking, the metallic finish is in the glass itself, not in the paint, its hard to take a photo of.

  6. Hey Mel
Speaking from experience you really can't get a truly realistic picture of how a room or area will look until after everything is done. Your cupboards are dark so the whiter splashback will actually contrast nicely against your cabinetry. Wait and see. I went through the same frustrations with a couple of mine when they were still in their early stages and believe me, things look a hell of alot different when plastic covers are off and things like basins, taps, shower screens, appliances etc are all in their rightful place and the cleaners have come through. Even though your kitchen might look awesome (actually correct that - WILL look awesome) I guess the frustration mainly lies with M studio staff who should have just sold you what you asked for. Whoever chose that splashback for its "greeness" obviously needs to look at the finished product (which I suggest you make them do) so they don't make a similar error with future clients. Can't wait to see the finished product - am quite certain it will look fantastic. Wait and see! :-)

    1. So true Jo! I am more understanding now, when I have walked through open houses before and seen odd colours and miss-matched walls and carpets etc I have thought to myself "what were they thinking!!" I now know how tricky it is to imagine what it will all look like together. I think having the stove and range-hood in will make it look a lot better,(like you said) even with the covers off it is already looking a lot better.

  7. Where did you get your splashback from?
