Paint too yellow?

Back to building!

Since my last update; the benchtops and sinks have been installed, a couple of bits of missing gyprock have been fixed, walls sanded and today the first coat of paint went on! Only thing is, the paint looks quite yellow?? We chose Dulux Grand Piano Half, which is supposed to look like this: Dulux Grand Piano Half but on the walls it looks a bit yellow??? I am going to go in the morning and speak to the painters first thing and see if they can do anything about it? They asked this afternoon if we liked it (which I hastily said yes being polite) but we hadn't really had a good look at it and in photos it comes up quite yellow! I just have phone photos but even on the 2 different phones they both look yellow, and they are a bit yellow to the naked eye, what do you think?

We would have loved the waterfall edged benchtops but the budget just didn't stretch that far unfortunately! It is funny, I know the kitchen sinks without the drying section are popular, but I am not a fan, I mean they look great but we still do dishes the old fashioned way (in the sink, not the dishwasher) so decided to go with the standard Metricon sink.

Seems such a waste to put tiles behind the mirror.

I don't understand why the bench wasn't put hard up against the wall? The power-point is going to be a bit odd? It's only the guest bathroom though so no biggie.

I'll update over the weekend what happens with the paint colour.

  1. I see what you mean about the yellow tinge, it does look like a really light strength lemony sort of colour! I guess it will change once you put furniture and floors down etc? I'm stressing about our external render colour as I think it's going to look baby blue but we just said we will paint over it if it's that bad - plus it's only the facade and the remainder is getting rendered and pai ted after handover so we will have a chance to change before the whole house gets done! Good luck speaking with the painters - everything else is looking great!

    1. Oh Em baby blue could be nice depending on the rest of the colours maybe? We figured we could just re-paint too but it would be a massive job to do the whole house :-( we could end up with a number of feature walls lol. The lemon is not going to go with the rest of our colour scheme!! Eeeek!

    2. I've come back to have a 'proper' look (ie not on my phone this time) and I think maybe the reason it looks more yellow is because they haven't dont right up to the cornice if you know what I mean?! I think once it's finished properly you won't notice it so much - when I look straight at the wall it looks fine, it's not until you look further up the picture where you see the white bare patch that it looks yellowy compared to that. I know I wouldn't like to re-paint the whole inside of a brand new house though! I must say also, I LOVE your basins, they are not so square and harsh like the majority around, I like the rounded corners!

    3. Thanks Em, I love our basins too! They were just the standard inclusion, but when we were checking everything out at studio M we really liked them, I too am not a huge fan of the pointy square edge ones.

  2. Is that coat just the sealer? We painted our house in Dulux White Duck and I remember thinking the same thing. I checked with the painter and he said that it was just the sealer which is only tinted. After the last two coats where rolled the colour looks exactly right. Good luck!

    1. Oooooh I really hope it is just sealer!!! I had a call from the SS just as I was about to leave to see the painters, who advised they weren't going to be there today anyway! He has given me the mobile number of the painter and I have left a msg but he hasn't called back yet. They did ask yesterday if it looked like the colour we picked so I presumed that meant that it would be the final colour :-( fingers crossed its just sealer!

  3. I have a grand piano half paint chit here (we put it on our eaves). It is a yellow based colour but it should come up looking fairly neutral. Maybe it isn't half - maybe they have full strength.

Very impressive progress though. I'm happy for you guys. So close to handover. :)

    1. Thanks Mugwa, I am hoping it does turn out neutral! Yep we are glad to be continually moving along, and talking to the SS on Friday it sounds like quite a lot is happening the next few weeks :-D

  4. Wow, the build is moving along. Our splashback is similar, I wasnt too happy with it at first but i think it will work when everything comes together. We also picked Grand Piano half for our doors and the full strength for the walls. I think it looks nice. Its not too yellow at all.
Love the tiles in your bathroom by the way!!
Good luck with it all :)

  5. Thanks Zee, I was going to ask about your paint colour because it did look very similar! I like it on your wallls so hopefully when all of the coats are done it will blend in better, especially with your timber floor boards it looks lovely! Hopefully you will post a pic of your splashback again when everything is in so I can take inspiration from your ideas ;-) ;-) hint hint.
